Ingredients

  • 3 egg whites
  • ¾ cup sugar (for egg whites)
  • ½ cup butter
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • ½ cup cocoa
  • 2 ½ cups cake flour
  • 1 1/3 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 1/3 cups cold water

Directions

  1. Beat egg whites stiff, beating the ¾ cup sugar into them as you go.
  2. Cream butter, salt, sugar and vanilla together.
  3. Sift together cocoa, cake flour and soda; add to the creamed mixture.
  4. Fold in the cold water. Add the egg whites.
  5. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.
