Ho Ho Bars

Sheet-pan German chocolate cake with pudding mix, spread with a whipped shortening filling and a boiled chocolate chip frosting.

Ingredients

  • 1 German chocolate cake mix
  • 1 small box instant chocolate pudding
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 cup sugar (for frosting)
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 6 tablespoons milk (for frosting)
  • 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips

Directions

  1. Mix cake mix according to directions; add dry pudding mix and beat well.
  2. Bake 20-25 minutes in a greased and floured 17 x 11 inch jellyroll pan. Cool cake completely.
  3. For the filling, beat together sugar, milk, vanilla, shortening, water and salt. Beat 5 minutes until thick and smooth. Add powdered sugar, mix well and spread over cooled cake.
  4. For the frosting, boil sugar, butter and milk for 1 minute in a saucepan. Take off heat and add chocolate chips and beat until thick. Pour over filling and carefully spread out.
  5. Cool to let the frosting set up.
